5 Area Hospitals Make Joint Commission List

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Five hospitals in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys were recognized by the Joint Commission as 2014 Top Performers on Key Quality Measures.

The hospitals were among 1,043 hospitals – a third of those eligible – recognized on the annual list published by the Joint Commission, which accredits health-care organizations.

Among the Ohio hospitals recognized were two affiliated with Mercy Health Youngstown: St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital in Boardman. Also included among the local Ohio hospitals listed are Belmont Pines Hospital in Liberty Township and the Surgery Center at Southwoods in Boardman.

“This recognition from the Joint Commission acknowledges the compassionate and quality care our doctors, nurses, clinical, support, professional and administrative staff provide every day,” said Don Koenig, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Mercy Health Youngstown.

In Sharon, Pa., Sharon Regional Health System was among the hospitals recognized. It was one of 118 hospitals affiliated with Community Health Systems Inc. included on the list.

“Being named a Top Performer is the result of all physicians, nurses and caregivers in a hospital following established evidence-based practices that improve outcomes for their patients,” said Wayne T. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Community Health Systems. “We congratulate all recipient hospitals for their achievement and commend them for their work to enhance the delivery of quality care.”
