6 Permits Issued for Utica in SE Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued six new horizontal well permits in the Utica shale for the week ended July 16, all in the southern portion of the oil and gas play.

Three permits were awarded to Chesapeake Exploration LLC for wells in Jefferson County; Ascent Resources received a permit for a well in Belmont County; Gulfport Energy Corp. received a permit for a well in Monroe County; and Antero Resource Corp. also received a permit for a new well in Noble County.

The rig count in Ohio’s Utica stood at 12, one fewer than the previous week.

To date, ODNR has issued 2,197 permits in the Utica and 1,759 of those wells are drilled. There are 1,347 horizontal shale wells producing in the Utica, according to the agency.

ODNR reported no new permits were issued in Columbiana, Trumbull or Mahoning counties, while the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection did not issue any new permits for wells in neighboring Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania.
