BGSU English Professor Chosen Dean of YSU College

Kristine L. Blair, professor and former chairwoman of the English Department oft Bowling Green State University, has been selected as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Youngstown State University, the university announced Wednesday.

The YSU Board of Trustees must confirm her appointment before she begins her duties May 16.

“Dr. Blair’s administrative and teaching experience at a public university in Ohio, as well as her passion for writing and academic scholarship, make her an excellent match to head our College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences,” said Martin Abraham, YSU provost and vice president for academic affairs, in a statement.

CLASS, with nearly 1,900 students, consists of nine academic departments and seven interdisciplinary programs. It offers 20 majors. Blair succeeds Jane Kestner, interim dean since Shearle Furnish left in the summer of 2014.

Blair earned a baccalaureate in journalism in 1986 and her master’s degree in English in 1988 at California State University, Sacramento, and her doctorate in English rhetoric at Purdue University in 1994.

She taught at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, before joining the English faculty at Bowling Green in 1996, where she was named professor in 2006. She was chairwoman of the English Department there from 2005 until 2014.

Among Blair’s research interests are gender and technology, the use of computers in teaching writing, technology and faculty development, e-learning, online pedagogies, digital language and literacy and the politics of online communication.

Among the honors she’s received at BGSU are its Faculty Senate Award for Leadership, Women of Distinction award and the President’s Award for Collaborative Research with Graduate Students.

She is the author three textbooks, has edited two other books, and written numerous articles, reviews and essays in peer-reviewed academic journals. She is also the editor of two such journals: Computers and Composition and its online companion, Computers and Composition Online.
