Car, Truck Sales Rise Slightly in Mahoning Valley

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Sales of new vehicles in the Mahoning Valley rose slightly in January as dealers sold 2,343 new cars and trucks, a 1.8% increase over January 2014, the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio reported Monday.

Combined sales of new and used vehicles rose 1.3% last month over a year earlier with 5,250 new and used cars and trucks leaving dealer showrooms and lots in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

The best-selling car was the Chevrolet Equinox as 149 left showrooms, a nearly 42% increase over January 2014. General Motors Co. manufactured all of the top-five cars in the Valley: the Chevy Malibu, 130 cars sold; the Chevy Silverado, 106; the Lordstown-made Chevy Cruze, 100; and the GMC Terrain, 88.
The top-11 vehicles all carry American nameplates. Ford vehicles held spots six through nine while Jeep and Chevrolet were in the 10 and 11 spots, respectively. In total, 28 of the top 40 best-selling vehicles in the Valley were American brands.

Sweeney Chevrolet, Boardman, sold the most new cars in January, moving 176 out of its showroom, an 18.1% increase over January 2014. Rounding out the top five are Sweeney Buick GMC, where 130 new cars and trucks were sold; Greenwood Chevrolet, Austintown, 127; Fred Martin Ford Mercedes, Austintown, 118; and Taylor Kia, Boardman, 99.
