YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – CNX Gas Co. LLC, a division of Pittsburgh-based Consol Energy, is looking to drill another horizontal well in Mahoning County, according to new permits released by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

ODNR issued a permit Aug. 29 for CNX to drill in Jackson Township on the Cadle property just east of South Bailey Road and south of the Youngstown Commerce Park, state records say. ODNR status reports indicate drilling has begun at the site.

This is the second well permitted in Mahoning County to CNX for exploration in the Utica shale. The first, the Hendricks well in Ellsworth Township, has been drilled and is waiting to be hydraulically fractured.

In all, 13 Utica wells are permitted in Mahoning County, ODNR records show.

Another CNX well site in Vienna Township in Trumbull County on the Wollam farm is still under development and scheduled to be drilled.

ODNR also issued a new permit Aug. 29 for Chesapeake Exploration LLC for a new horizontal well in Knox Township in Columbiana County on the Kibler farm.

The state also issued six new Utica permits to Chesapeake in Carroll County, four of them in Loudon Township and two in Augusta Township, ODNR reports.
