Weatherford Eyes Fall Start, 150 Jobs in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Weatherford International Ltd. tentatively plans to begin operations at its new Youngstown site in late September and hire about 150 employees, the company said Monday.
The Swiss-based multinational oilfield services and technology company, plans to locate a “multiphase operations facility offering a wide variety of products and services that span the lifecycle of a well – drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention,” according to a fact sheet issued by the company.
Weatherford is in the process of finalizing specifically what activities will take place at the site and what skills will be required, said Melanie Kania, communications specialist. “What we need to do is finalize what product lines we are going to have at that facility,” and once that is determined, the company will have a better idea of what positions will need to be filled and what skills they will be looking for in applicants, she explained.
Last month a Weatherford affiliate, Houston-based Weatherford Artificial Lift Systems, purchased a 153,708-square-foot building and 20 acres of land at 1110 Performance Place. The purchase price for the site, previously occupied by Polyair, was $3.4 million. In March, Kania said the company was scouting several locations in the city.
Weatherford wanted a site positioned in the Utica shale, and the Youngstown location’s easy access to the Interstate system and availability of a building in an industrial park make it attractive to the company, Kania said.
Of the 150 positions at the Youngstown site, about 75% will be hourly and the remainder salaried management. Full training programs, lasting three to four months, will ensure new employees are “properly trained and acclimated into their role,” she said. Weatherford will host local jobs fairs to recruit candidates but has not scheduled any as yet.
“There are going to be job opportunities for skilled and unskilled positions,” Kania said. How long the training will take will depend on the positions, and training could be conducted here or outside the area.
The company had scheduled a job fair for March 13 and 14 but cancelled it a few days earlier.
Weatherford operates more than 1,000 locations worldwide and employs more than 60,000.
