Home Savings Foundation Boosts Summer Reading Program

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Home Savings Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 Wednesday to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County to support its Summer Discovery summer reading program.

The funds specifically will go to sponsor the Summer Discovery Author Breakfast featuring Nancy Krulik. Children who achieve eight badges in the summer reading program — “On Your Mark, Get set …Read!” — by July 23 will be invited to attend the author breakfast featuring Krulik, who is known for the Katie Kazoo and George Brown book series.

About 3,000 children are registered in the summer reading program this year, according to the library.

“It’s a real exciting, growing program we have that helps combat the summer slide,” Tim Bresnahan, a member of the library’s board of directors, said at the check presentation. The donation from Home Savings will play “a huge part” in supporting the program, he added.

“We love our libraries. It’s a treasure we have here in the Valley and we have phenomenal libraries,” said Barbara Radis, executive vice president of the Home Savings and Loan Co.

The library program keeps kids reading through the summer and engaged in learning, so supporting so kids are ready to return to school in the fall is “an important cause for the bank,” she said.
