Local Unemployment Shows Slight Decrease in July

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – July’s unemployment rates for Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties edged down from the month before, data released this morning show.

Unemployment last month was 6.2% in both Columbiana and Trumbull counties and 5.8% in Mahoning County, down a tenth of a percentage point from the June rate for each, according to the Ohio Department of Job and family Services.

Last month’s rate also was down from a year earlier in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Trumbull’s July 2015 rate was 6.3% and Mahoning’s was 6.1%. Columbiana County’s rate was higher last month than a year earlier, when unemployment was 5.9%.

Unemployment rates in the Mahoning Valley’s two largest cities last month also were down from a year earlier and from the month before. In Youngstown, the unemployment rate was 7.5% in July, down from 7.6% a month earlier and down from 8.2% in July 2015. Warren’s rate was 7.3% last month, down from June’s 7.5% and July 2015’s 7.4%.

For the metropolitan statistical area that covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County, Pa., the July unemployment rate was 6.25, unchanged from both the month before and a year earlier. In the Ohio-only portion of the district, unemployment was 6.0% in July, down from 6.1% the month before and from 6.2% a year earlier.
