Mercy Hospitals in Valley Ranked Among Best in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, St. Joseph Warren Hospital and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital have been recognized among the best hospitals in Ohio for 2015-16 by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 26th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.

St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is ranked #17 in Ohio, St. Joseph Warren Hospital and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital tie for #18 along with five other hospitals throughout the state.

U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and ranked the top 50 in most specialties. Less than 3% of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2015-16 were nationally ranked in one or more specialties.

St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is rated high-performing in three specialties: knee replacement, treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and treatment of heart failure. St. Joseph Warren Hospital is rated high-performing in two specialties: knee replacement and treatment of COPD. St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital is also rated high-performing in two specialties: treatment of COPD and heart failure.

To be rated high-performing, hospitals must exceed expected standards of care. Of hospitals evaluated, only 8% exceeded expected standards of care for the treatment of COPD, 10% exceeded expected standards of care for knee replacement, and 11% exceeded expected standards of care for the treatment of heart failure.

“This recognition, based on patient outcome data, demonstrates that our consistent focus on delivering high-quality care to every patient, every day, is working,” said Don Koenig, executive vice president, Mercy Health-Youngstown. “This is a direct result of the superb teamwork of our doctors, nurses and affiliated care givers.

“We are especially proud to have all three hospitals ranked as high performing for COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema,” he continued. “This puts us in the top decile in the nation. We are also proud to be the only local hospitals rated as high performing in knee joint replacements, and the only high-performing hospital in the Mahoning Valley for congestive heart failure. Our Heart & Vascular Center team of cardiologists and nurses and rehabilitation specialists provide great care, and we are so proud of their national recognition.”

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, adequacy of nurse staffing and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
