Past President of Grove City College Honored

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Pennsylvania has honored Richard G. Jewell, the immediate past president of Grove City College, with its Francis J. Michelini Award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education.

Jewell was president of the private liberal arts college from 2003 until 2014.

The association of 89 college and universities  presented the award last week at its annual meeting.

“Dick Jewell was perhaps the most important non-elected official whose advocacy helped secure the Ready to Succeed Scholarship Program for middle-income students that will continue to benefit thousands of students in the coming years,” said Don Francis, president of the association, in presenting the award.

As government relations liaison on the association board of trustees, Jewell lobbied the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to create a scholarship program for high school students who maintain high GPAs in their sophomore, junior and senior years. The state Legislature and governor enacted the program in 2014. More than 3,000 students benefited from the scholarships in its first year, the association of independent colleges said.

The Michelini Award was first presented in 1992.
