YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports that 26 oil and gas rigs were operational in the Utica shale during the week ended July 22, three more than the previous week.

ODNR, however, did not issue a single new horizontal permit to energy exploration companies during the week.

To date, there are 2,552 horizontal permits issued in eastern Ohio’s Utica. Of that number, 2,057 of the wells are drilled and 1,590 of them are producing.

Also, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection reports it did not issue new permits for horizontal wells in Lawrence and Mercer counties in western Pennsylvania.
