Oh-Penn Network to Mark Apprenticeship Week

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – As part of National Apprenticeship Awareness Week Nov. 14 through 19, the Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network will be promoting its program through its social media channels.

Beginning Nov. 14, the network will share a new video each day featuring employers and apprentices sharing their experiences with the program. The videos will be shared on the Industry Needs You Facebook page.

“This is a chance for our early adopters to share what value apprenticeships have for their company specifically,” said project manager Jessica Borza in a release. “These videos not only spread awareness, but can help other employers see how the apprenticeship program will work for them.”

Two panel discussions will also be held, one each in Ohio and Pennsylvania, featuring a company that has adopted an apprenticeship program, an apprentice and an educator. The Pennsylvania event will be held at Industrial Sales and Manufacturing in Erie from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 14, while the Ohio event will be held the next day at Quality Switch in Newtown Falls at the same time.

The Greater Oh-Penn Manufacturing Apprenticeship Network, formed last year through a Department of Labor grant, includes companies in 14 counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Last year, the Department of Labor created the week-long celebration after awarding nearly $90 million in grants to help create apprenticeship programs nationwide. In 2015 there were 313 National Apprenticeship Week events in 47 states.

“Apprenticeships are experiencing a modern renaissance in America because the earn-while-learn model is a win-win proposition for workers looking to punch their ticket to the middle-class and for employers looking to grow and thrive in our modern global economy,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez in a statement.
