Youngstown Foundation Awards Nearly $400,000

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Thirty five area organizations have been awarded grants totaling $394,352.50 by the distribution committee of The Youngstown Foundation. Grants were awarded from the foundation’s unrestricted fund as well as the Hine Memorial Fund, the Mahoning Valley Sports Charities, and several donor advised and restricted funds.

“Each quarterly round of grants is unique, yet all reflect the diverse and vast range of needs in the greater Youngstown area,” stated Jan Strasfeld, executive director of The Youngstown Foundation. “As the largest community foundation in the region, we are humbled by the generosity of our donors, whose gifts ensure that we can continue to support our community’s quality of life for current and future generations.”

The foundation awarded $198,900 from its unrestricted fund to the following organizations:

  • Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care
  • Youngstown Community Food Center & Gleaners Food Bank
  • Help Hotline
  • Junior Achievement of MV
  • Mahoning Valley College Access Program
  • Rescue Mission
  • Second Harvest Food Bank
  • Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber
  • Youngstown State University
  • Meridian Community Care
  • Top Hat Productions

Of the thirty five grants awarded, five area organizations committed to serving children with diagnosed disabilities received funds from the Hine Memorial Fund of the Youngstown Foundation totaling $130,000. They include:

  • Down Syndrome Association of the Mahoningn Valley
  • Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries
  • Autism Society
  • Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp.
  • Akron Children’s Hospital

Donor advised funds grants totaling $49,770 were awarded to the following organizations:

  • Protestant Family Services
  • Mahoning Valley Historical Society
  • Sister Jerome’s Poor Ministry/Ursuline Sisters
  • American Cancer Society
  • Salvation Army
  • Youngstown Symphony Society
  • Juvenile Diabetes Mid-Ohio Chapter
  • Youngstown State University
  • Project KIND

From the Mahoning Valley Sports Charities, $9,182.50 was awarded to:

  • Trumbull Metropolitan Housing
  • Student Government Association of Youngstown State University.

The recently established Monday Musical Club Fund awarded its first grants totaling $6,500:

  • Dana School of Music
  • Stambaugh Youth Band
  • Opera Western Reserve
  • The Youngstown Connection/Youngstown City Schools

Founded in 1918, The Youngstown Foundation is the largest community foundation in the Valley, the fourth  oldest in the country and ranked in the top 100 nationally. With more than $ 100M in charitable funds, over $ 4M in grants is awarded annually.
