YSU Launches Fall Semester with Welcome Week

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State University marks the start of fall semester this week with a series of activities for new and returning students.

Classes begin Wednesday.

All this week, the Home Savings and Loan Co. will perform “a random act of kindness “by covering and paying for the parking meters surrounding the YSU campus. Home Savings representatives were to begin covering the meters at 7 a.m. this morning near Williamson Hall.

Meanwhile, YSU students and other motorists in the area of campus will have to cope with two major road construction projects, the Lincoln Avenue streetscape and safety enhancement project that started this summer and the upcoming year-long upgrade to Wick Avenue.

YSU’s Welcome Week activities run through Sept. 2.

Today and tomorrow, first-year students will become acquainted with faculty, staff and each other during Ignite, an orientation program.

Hundreds of students are expected to attend the annual Block Party in Kilcawley Center, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Star Wars-themed event “Your Fall Awakens” features free food and drinks, cake, karaoke and more than 35 booths with prizes.

The Student Veterans Welcome Cookout will take place Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Resource Center, East Lawn.

The Student Leadership Summit, featuring guest speakers, interactive leadership sessions, giveaways, and lunch, will take place Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room.
