COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two Mahoning Valley breweries earned awards at the Ohio Craft Brewers Association’s inaugural Ohio Beer Awards competition, which took place Monday.

Birdfish Brewing of Columbiana won the silver medal in the dark European lager category for its Tmave Pivo.

The 1547 Project in Cortland won the silver medal in the porter and stout category for its Shuck Yeah.

In all, 47 Ohio breweries, cideries and meaderies earned medals in the competition’s 26 categories.

Masthead Brewing and Noble Beast Brewing of Cleveland were honored with brewery of the year awards after earning four medals each in the competition.

The recently reopened Akronym Brewing in Akron also won four medals but missed the brewery of the year award by a single point, according to a news release.

The Ohio Craft Brewers Association is a nonprofit trade organization that represents all of the state’s small and independent breweries.

The competition attracted 481 entries from 102 breweries, cideries and meaderies. Judging took place at MadTree Brewing in Cincinnati in January, drawing more than 70 judges who picked winners after blind tasting.
