The Update | Dean Martin Tribute at the Robins; Art Sale at TAC Creative

WARREN, Ohio – “Dean Lives: The Dean Martin Story,” starring Drew Anthony, will come to the Robins Theatre on Friday, Feb. 14.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show range from $29 to $49 (plus applicable fees) and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at RobinsTheatre.com and the box office, 160 E. Market St.

“Dean Lives” is a musical concert that covers the career of Dean Martin in three musical acts as recalled through flashbacks of the show’s fictional character “the Ol’ Theater Caretaker,” a lifelong friend and fan of Dean Martin’s.

During the 90-minute show, Anthony performs some of Martin’s most beloved songs. Actors portraying Jerry Lewis, Johnny Carson, Peggy Lee and Marilyn Monroe visit.

Art Sale with Works by Ward Bakery, LOOP Members

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – FaLaLa at TAC, an artists market and chance auction, will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14-15, at TAC Creative, 2246 Glenwood Ave.

A small group of artists who were tenants of the Ward Bakery Building and also some LOOP artists will sell their works at the event.

TAC Creative is a workspace operated by artists Tony Armeni, Abby Wendle and Connie Kolarik.

Kolachi Baking Contest at SLAVidays Fest

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Simply Slavic festival will present its inaugural kolachi baking contest during the Home for the SLAVidays event from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 20 at Penguin City Brewing, downtown.

The competition invites bakers to showcase their skills at baking the traditional Slavic pastry. Contestants can enter in two categories: traditional (poppy seed, nut or cottage cheese filling) or modern (any other filling).

To enter, submit a completed entry form with a description of your kolachi’s Slavic roots (75 words or less) and a $5 nonrefundable entry fee by Dec. 18. Entry is free for participants under age 18.

Entries will be judged on taste (40%), authenticity (25%), presentation (15%), texture (10%) and look and smell (10%) by a panel of professional bakers, community leaders and business representatives.

First-, second- and third-place winners will be announced during the event at 8 p.m. and recognized at the 2025 Simply Slavic Festival.

Bakers must deliver their kolachi entries to Penguin City Brewing, 460 E. Federal St., from 4 to 6 p.m. on the day of the event.

Portions of each entry will be used for judging, with the remainder sold to support Simply Slavic’s year-round cultural programs and scholarships.

Hoyt Institute Offers Workshops, Classes

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Hoyt Institute is offering workshops and courses beginning the week of Jan. 7 and continuing through March 8. Most meet one day a week.

Core classes include ceramics, watercolor, drawing, stained glass, yoga and voice for teens and adults; and animation, ceramics, drawing, mixed media, cello and voice for youths.  

Four-week courses additionally introduce new media, such as Smart Phone Photography with Cassidy Tonks Hatch (Jan. 7-28), or hone a particular skill, such as Illustration with Jason Naelitz (Jan. 11-Feb. 1). You can explore Creative Photography (Feb. 4-25) or craft a ceramic travel mug with Skyler Campbell (Feb. 1-22).

One- and two-day workshops provide options to experiment with Alcohol Inks on Paper (Jan. 14), DSLR photography (Jan. 8), Sticker Making (March 1), Mosaics (Jan. 30 or Feb. 20), Paper Quilling (Feb. 4), Paper Marbling (Feb. 22), Origami (March 1) and Stained Glass (Feb. 8 or March 1). Ages 3 to 7 can explore Rainbow Weaving on Feb. 8 and Magic Trash on April 5, accompanied by stories.  

While there are discounts available to members, you do not need to be a member to participate.
