YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Dr. Rashid Abdu, founder of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, said the Panerathon has become an annual community celebration while raising money to help women access breast cancer care. Now in its 17th year, the event brings thousands of people together to run, walk and support the Joanie’s Promise Fund, which assists patients who cannot afford care.
Abdu said the idea for the center grew from his wife Joanie’s battle with aggressive breast cancer. After visiting a comprehensive breast care center in California, he envisioned a similar facility in Youngstown. It took 18 years to make that vision a reality.
The center brings mammograms, ultrasounds, MRIs, physician visits and surgical care together in one location, reducing the need for patients to travel between facilities. Abdu said the goal is to provide timely, comprehensive care regardless of a patient’s financial circumstances, with Joanie’s Promise helping those who need it.
