AKRON, Ohio – Akron Children’s has been awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists Accreditation Committee based on results of a recent on-site inspection.
CAP accreditation elevates quality and mitigates risk, an important way that laboratories can contribute to improved patient outcomes, a news release states.
Akron Children’s is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.
“Every test result plays an important role in a child’s diagnosis and treatment. CAP accreditation demonstrates that our laboratory meets the highest standards and gives families and providers confidence that they can rely on the results we deliver,” said Dr. Jennifer Baccon, chair of Akron Children’s pathology lab.
During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record and overall management. These reviews help verify activities and reflect the most recent best practices, the release states.
With over 23,000 laboratory participants, in addition to accreditation, CAP offers proficiency testing/external quality assessment programs, quality improvement tools and cancer protocols and evidence-based guidelines to ensure excellence in all areas across the laboratory.
