Akron Children’s Opens Special Care Nursery at St. Joseph
WARREN, Ohio – Akron Children’s Hospital will open its special care nursery today at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.
Akron Children’s partnered with St. Joseph Warren Hospital two years ago to operate its special care nursery as well as a five-bed inpatient pediatric unit, which began operations earlier this year.
The six-bed unit is designated a Level II special care nursery, which increases its ability to care for sick and premature babies, according to a Akron Children’s Hospital.
“Our clinicians will be available 24/7 and are experts in high-risk deliveries, plus caring for premature and sick babies,” said Dr. Elena Rossi, neonatologist and associate chair of pediatrics for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. “By providing an increased level of neonatal care, we can keep more moms and babies together in the comfort of their own community.”
Akron Children’s also operates a campus in Boardman as well as satellite centers and offices throughout the Mahoning Valley.
At the Warren unit opening today, specially trained doctors and nurses can care for babies born up to eight weeks premature (at or greater than 32 weeks gestation), who weigh at least three pounds and who are physiologically immature, such as those who have breathing problems or are unable to feed orally.
“St. Joseph is proud to bring Akron Children’s advanced pediatric and neonatal services to Trumbull County,” Kathy Cook, president of St. Joseph Warren Hospital, said in a statement. “This relationship will build upon St. Joseph’s strong pediatric program and make it easier for Trumbull County families to access a full range of pediatric services.”
