STRUTHERS, Ohio – Professional advisers from the America in Bloom program will visit Struthers, one of the many communities across the country working on local revitalization programs.
Communities that are more welcoming and vibrant have a competitive advantage in stimulating economic development and creating a thriving place for people to live, work and play, and America in Bloom communities experience better cooperation among municipal, commercial and residential sectors because everyone works toward a common goal, a news release states.
The advisers, who will visit the city June 23-24, will evaluate the community’s efforts in the areas of community vitality, floral impact, landscaping, urban forestry, environmental initiatives, celebrating heritage and overall impression.
In addition to receiving a detailed written evaluation from the advisers citing strengths and opportunities for improvement, participants receive a special mention for what the judges deem to be an extraordinary project or program.
Other awards and recognitions include population category winners, outstanding achievement awards in several categories, special awards, community champion and a YouTube video.
The adviser team members are Sharon Hadden and Diana Smith. Hadden, who studied horticulture in the United Kingdom and ran her own company growing and selling everlasting flowers and herbs, works with Fox 59 as its Garden Guru on the “Good Morning Show.” Smith has a wealth of experience in community projects, grant writing and organizational strategy. Her work spans various initiatives, from strategic planning and event organization to environmental stewardship to enhance public spaces and green initiatives.
Awards will be announced Sept. 25-27 at AIB’s National Symposium & Awards Celebration in Rochester, Mich.
To date, more than 370 communities from 44 states have participated in the America in Bloom program.
