STRUTHERS, Ohio – Aqua Ohio is scheduled to begin a $3 million water main replacement project in the city of Struthers, village of Poland and Poland Township.

The project area includes Lyon Boulevard, Beechwood Drive, Renwick Drive and Poland-Struthers Road from Beechwood Drive to Poland Avenue.

Rudzik Excavating of Struthers has been awarded the contract to perform the work, which is expected to take approximately seven months.

The project will include:

  • Replacing and upsizing 6-inch and 8-inch diameter cast iron pipe with new 8-inch, 12-inch and 16-inch ductile iron pipe, which is stronger and more corrosion resistant. The new, larger main will improve transmission capacity and reliability of service.
  • Installing 23 new hydrants to improve fire protection and 47 new valves to isolate sections of main for future maintenance or repairs.
  • Installing new Aqua-owned service lines for 177 customers. Any lead or galvanized customer-owned service lines will be offered to be replaced at no direct cost to the customer through Aqua’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program.

“These mains have been the source of several leaks in the past, are known to include lead service lines and have reached the end of their useful life,” said Jennifer Johnson, Aqua Ohio area manager. “Replacing aging mains and removing lead service lines is part of Aqua’s ongoing commitment to invest in the water system to maintain compliance and reliability of service.”

Water service is not expected to be interrupted during construction except for short-term service disconnections near the end of the project as properties are connected to the new mains. Impacted residents will be notified in advance of the interruptions.

Johnson said the project is part of $12 million that Aqua will invest in the Mahoning Valley and $76 million across the company’s 40 Ohio systems this year.
