YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – As part of its 150th anniversary celebration, the Mahoning Valley Historical Society hosted its June edition of “Bites and Bits of History” at the Tyler History Center, featuring Connie Jones, project manager of the Stewart Media Archives.
Jones presented “Exploring the 1960s & 70s in the Mahoning Valley Through Media,” highlighting archived video clips from pivotal events such as the decline of the steel industry, organized crime in the region and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The presentation also included lighter stories from local newscasts, such as ice skating in Mill Creek Park, vending machines at the YMCA and early computer use at Youngstown University. Jones emphasized the rarity and value of the historical video archive, which preserves decades of regional broadcast history.
