YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A roof replacement project is underway at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s 250 E. Federal St. building.

Boak & Sons Inc., Austintown, began installation of the 17,500-square-foot roof Sept. 8, and the work should be complete by the end of next week, said Bill Lawson, MVHS executive director. MVHS purchased the building in 2023.

According to an MVHS news release, Boak & Sons is donating all of the labor and equipment for the roof replacement and providing materials at cost. The news release describes the work as “an essential step in preparing the site for development of the Idora Park Experience Museum and an interactive collections storage center for the community.”

Canfield residents Jim and Toni Amey donated their collection of memorabilia from the Youngstown amusement park to the society about a year ago.

“We’re very proud and honored to work with the Historical Society on this important project,” Sam Boak, Boak & Sons owner, said in the news release. “The Youngstown community has been very supportive of Boak & Sons over the years, and we’re happy to support the community with projects like this one.”

The show of support from Boak & Sons not only protects MVHS’s investment but also demonstrates the kind of community partnership that the historical society has experienced since its founding in 1875 and serves as a powerful example of local business leadership and generosity at work, the news release states. It also creates momentum to inspire future supporters to give.

Work continues at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s building at 250 E. Federal St.

The total cost of the roof project is estimated at about $350,000, but a final number won’t be available until after the work is done, Lawson said.

“Members of the board, volunteers and staff of Mahoning Valley Historical Society greatly appreciate the concern and generosity of Sam Boak and his family, and all of the staff of Boak & Sons,” he said.

“Giving back to the community is an important part of their business plan, and we at MVHS are fortunate to benefit from their philanthropy,” he continued. “Their gift to 150 Years: The Campaign for Mahoning Valley Historical Society is a reminder that all gifts – financial, in-kind – are welcome and will help our organization reach the campaign goal.”

The MVHS board and capital campaign committee “are doing a great job in raising needed funds and investing and spending these resources wisely,” Boak said.
