YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Incumbent Mayor Jamael Tito Brown and challenger Derrick McDowell appeared Wednesday at the Rotary Club of Youngstown’s Meet the Candidates forum, held at the Wick Park Pavilion, ahead of the Nov. 4 general election.

Brown cited his administration’s record on fiscal management, public safety and economic development, pointing to eight consecutive balanced budgets, a reported 56% reduction in crime and increased investment in housing and technology. He defended his leadership during crises, including the Realty Tower explosion and the stalled Chill Can plant development, emphasizing that while both issues began before his tenure, his administration took corrective action.

McDowell, founder of the Youngstown Flea and a first-time candidate, called for deeper community engagement, transparency and accountability. He criticized Brown’s handling of long-standing projects, saying persistent neighborhood disinvestment and lack of responsiveness to downtown business concerns reflected the need for new leadership. He linked the Realty Tower disaster to what he described as poor planning and inadequate oversight of the Smart2 infrastructure project.
