YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In an era defined by the transfer portal and constant roster movement, Youngstown State University quarterback Beau Brungard is staying put.
The Youngstown native and Springfield Local High School graduate announced he will return to YSU for his final season, calling it “a pretty easy decision” to remain home for his senior year.
Brungard said the decision was rooted in relationships, development and a sense of loyalty to the program that first believed in him. Coming out of high school, he said Doug Phillips was the only coach to offer him an opportunity to play Division I football.
“He took a chance on me when every other school in the country passed me up,” Brungard said.
After arriving at YSU, Brungard said he quickly realized he would need to grow beyond natural athletic ability. Through work with the coaching and strength staff, he developed into a more complete player – growth he credits as a key factor in his decision to remain with the Penguins.
Despite receiving outside interest amid the evolving college football landscape, Brungard said he turned to prayer as he weighed his options. Ultimately, he chose to stay in Youngstown, emphasizing that the program is “a lot bigger than me” and that loyalty still matters.
With his final season ahead, Brungard said he is confident in his choice and grateful for the opportunity to finish his career where it began.
“I know I won’t regret it,” he said.
