YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An exhibition of artworks by the late Fred Staloff will open Sept. 7 at The Butler Institute of American Art and run through Nov. 16.
An opening reception will take place from 1-3 p.m. in the Finnegan/Hynes Gallery on the second floor.
“Fred Staloff: Origins of a Modernist” will feature the brilliant landscapes, still lifes, portraits and figurative works by the New Jersey artist.
“In many ways, Staloff represents the best of American painting at midcentury,” said Louis Zona, executive director of the Butler.
Gary Erbe, guest curator, said Staloff’s paintings are modern in every respect, clearly defined and aesthetically pleasing.
“He showed a true understanding of form and color, simplifying nature to the point of abstraction,” Erbe said.
Staloff is represented in the Butler’s permanent collection.
He and his wife, Janette, donated his entire body of work to the museum. Some of his pieces are on permanent view in the Fred and Janette Staloff Gallery on the first level in the Butler’s Beecher Court.
Janette will attend the reception on Sept. 7.
Admission to The Butler, 524 Wick Ave., is free. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday from 12-4 p.m.
