Butler Trumbull Hosts Area Artists Annual Exhibition

HOWLAND – The Area Artists Annual Exhibition – the premiere show for regional works – opens Sunday at The Butler Institute of American Art’s Trumbull Branch, 9350 E. Market St., and will run through Nov. 27.

“As usual, The Butler Area Artist Annual show demonstrates the variety of creative and skilled artists in our area,” says Louis Zona, executive director and chief curator of the museum. “Visitors to the Trumbull Branch are in for a real treat.”

Zona will announce the winners at Sunday’s opening reception, a private event that will run from 1 to 3 p.m.

The exhibition, now in its 81st year, is one of the three juried exhibitions The Butler presents each year. This year’s juror was Russell Maddick, professor emeritus from the department of art at Youngstown State University.

A total of 95 artists submitted 193 original pieces of artwork this year. Of those works, 92 from 70 artists were selected.

The Area Artists Annual is limited to artists who reside in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio, and Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania.

Works in all media are eligible, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, sculpture and crafts.

This year is a special one for the exhibition, as it is part of The Butler’s 100th anniversary celebration.

It also marks the show’s second consecutive year at the Trumbull Branch. Previously, it was at the main location in Youngstown.

The Trumbull Branch is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission and parking are free.
