YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – John Diana, a Howland High School graduate and longtime golf professional, spent two years as a full-time caddie on the PGA Tour, carrying the bag for fellow Trumbull County native Jason Kokrak.
Diana, now a teaching professional at The Bunker in Boardman, says the role of a caddie has evolved into a critical part of a professional golfer’s team, requiring extensive preparation, course analysis and psychological insight.
Though he came to caddying later in life, Diana says his knowledge of the game and relationship with Kokrak were key to his success. His experience reflects how the profession has become more strategic and demanding, even as local caddie programs have disappeared from the Mahoning Valley.
