YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – In this episode of the “It’s All About the Team” podcast, hosted by Jim Tressel, Youngstown State University football coach Doug Phillips discusses how the Covid-19 pandemic reshaped the early days of his leadership, forcing the new coaching staff and players to connect and install systems virtually when spring practice and traditional face-to-face preparation were halted.
Phillips reflects on adapting to unprecedented circumstances in 2020, using daily Zoom meetings with position groups to teach schemes, build relationships and keep communication strong while players stayed apart. With in-person gatherings limited, the Penguins’ coaching staff crafted a remote plan that kept players engaged and prepared for eventual on-field opportunities.
Phillips also shares how the team eventually came together over time, relying on patience, structure and ongoing connection to form the bonds necessary for success once full competition resumed.
