COLUMBIANA, Ohio – Construction has begun on the first phase of a new inclusive playground at Firestone Park, and state funding has been secured to support a second phase of the project.
The new playground will offer an inclusive experience where everyone can play, learn and grow, no matter their ability. The playground will feature accessible equipment, sensory-friendly spaces and design elements that promote inclusion, safety and community engagement.
Construction is underway after years of planning, fundraising and community support. The city credited the Columbiana Project Playground Committee with leading fundraising efforts and organizing community support for the project. Committee members include Michaela Good, Lauren Wiley, Fritz Nelson, Mallory DeMaiolo, Stephanie Kale and Lauren Halverstadt.
“The dedication of the committee has been truly remarkable,” Mayor Rick Noel said. “Their passion, persistence and commitment to creating an inclusive recreational space for children and families have inspired our entire community. We are incredibly thankful for everything they have done to move this project forward.”
The project will receive $300,000 through Ohio’s capital budget to help fund the second phase, which will include accessible restroom facilities and a community learning space.
“Being included in the capital budget puts Firestone Park on the map in a new way,” said Michaela Good, president of Columbiana Project Playground. “This investment demonstrates that state leaders recognize the importance of what we’re building here. Firestone Park has long been one of Columbiana’s greatest assets, and by transforming a once outdated and deteriorating playground that provided lifetime memories for the last 30 years, this new all-inclusive facility will provide lasting memories for the community and visitors for many years to come.”
The new playground will replace Funland, which was built by volunteers and community members in 1995.
“Project Playground truly represents the spirit of our community,” said Skip Liston, City Council president. “This project would not be possible without the generosity of so many people who believed in creating an inclusive space for children and families. Every donation, sponsorship and volunteer hour has helped Columbiana Project Playground reach this milestone, and we are incredibly grateful for the support they have received.”
City Manager Lance Willard credited Columbiana Project Playground for the group’s efforts on the project.
“Their commitment to creating an inclusive recreational space for children of all abilities has inspired tremendous community support and helped turn a vision into reality,” he said.
