YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – As nonprofits face rising costs and shrinking funding, the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley expands its support and looks ahead to its next chapter.
Casey Krell, CFMV president, discusses the organization’s 2025 annual report, which highlights $6.6 million in grants and scholarships awarded while outlining priorities for 2026.
Krell says 2025 was defined by growing uncertainty for nonprofit organizations as many faced reduced grant funding, rising operating costs and increasing demand for services. In response, the foundation expanded its emergency grant program and works to connect nonprofits with additional educational resources, networking opportunities and long-term support.
Beyond grantmaking, Krell says the foundation continues to invest in the long-term sustainability of the Mahoning Valley by helping strengthen nonprofit organizations and encouraging local philanthropy. She says the growing number of donors establishing charitable funds reflects the Valley’s tradition of supporting its communities during challenging times.
The foundation is gathering feedback from residents, nonprofits and community leaders through surveys and focus groups as it evaluates its strategic plan and identifies future priorities. Krell says the goal is to better understand community needs and ensure the foundation remains an effective partner for organizations across the Valley.
