Cortland Tops List of Places to Retire in Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Three Mahoning Valley communities were ranked among the 10 best places to retire in Ohio by SmartAsset. Topping the list was Cortland, followed by Youngstown. Canfield placed fifth on the list.
The main factors the list considered are taxes (income and sales combined); number of doctors’ offices; and opportunity for recreation and a social life.
Cortland, with seniors representing 20.9% of its population, received a score of 90.2 on the Best Places to Retire Index. It earned its ranking at the top of the list with a tax rate of 10.8%, 4.2 doctors’ offices per 1,000 people, 1.4 retirement centers per 1,000 people.
Youngstown had a score of 86.1 on the index, placing just below Cortland. With seniors representing 15.9% of its population, its tax rate was 11.1%, and it has 5.1 doctors’ offices, 0.3 recreation centers and 0.8 retirement centers per 1,000 people.
Canfield scored 83.2 on the index. Its tax rate was listed at 11.5%. For every 1,000 people, it has 7.4 doctors’ offices, 0.1 recreation centers and 1.0 retirement centers. Seniors represent 17.1% of its population.
