DEERFIELD, Ohio – Deerfield Ag Services, an independently owned agricultural supply and grain business serving farmers across northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania since 1959, transitioned, effective Feb. 1, to employee ownership through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
The transition is the result of several years of succession planning by second-generation owners Bill Wallbrown, John Wallbrown and Beth Wallbrown-Padisak. The ESOP structure allows the company to remain privately held and locally focused at a time when consolidation continues across the agricultural retail and grain industries, a news release states.
“Maintaining independence and continuing to serve our farm customers the way we always have was central to this decision,” Bill Wallbrown said. “We approached this transition thoughtfully and prayerfully, seeking to be good stewards of the business entrusted to us while positioning Deerfield Ag Services for the future.”
Founded by Boyd and Joan Wallbrown, the company has grown over the past six decades alongside the farm families and the communities it serves. Deerfield Ag Services is a full-service agricultural retail business with four locations and offers a wide range of crop input products and agronomy and grain marketing services.
Its locations provide access to domestic and international markets, including shipments of grain to Southeast Asia, positioning the company as a link between local farmers and global demand, the release states.
“For agricultural retailers, trust and continuity matter,” Beth Wallbrown-Padisak said. “Our customers will continue working with the same agronomists, grain team, drivers and customer service staff they know. The difference is that our employees now have an ownership stake in the future of Deerfield Ag Services.”
Under the ESOP structure, Deerfield employees will earn ownership shares over time as a retirement benefit, creating a connection between employee performance and the long-term success of the business.
“We felt led to take care of our employees in a way that provides a retirement benefit beyond our existing 401(k) plan,” John Wallbrown said. “The ESOP allows us to share the future of Deerfield Ag Services with people who have helped build it.”
Bill and John Wallbrown will remain involved during a transition period to support leadership continuity and ongoing operations.
