DeSalvo Construction Raises $164K for Akron Children’s Hospital
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – DeSalvo Construction raised $164,800 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley through a Giving Tuesday campaign.
The Hubbard design-build contractor matched $50,000 in online donations during the campaign.
In addition to raising funds for the hospital, the effort also raised awareness of endocrinology and type 1 diabetes. Owner Joe DeSalvo and his family have been donating to the hospital for the past six years after his daughter, Jessie, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10.
“It’s amazing how misunderstood diabetes is,” DeSalvo said. “Some people think it’s short-term or something that can be outgrown or fixed. But Jessie will have this her whole life. Bringing awareness to the disease is something that is really important to Jessie and our family.”
Type 1 diabetes is difficult to live with, but donor support and advocacy can make a difference, according to the hospital’s website.
“I hope for a cure someday. Type 1 diabetes is manageable, but between managing your health, money and insurance, it can be a struggle for a lot of people,” DeSalvo said.
Although the match has ended, donations can still be made here or by texting ACH2022 to 41444.
