SALEM, Ohio – Salem Regional Medical Center announced Tuesday that former Major League Baseball pitcher and cancer survivor Dave Dravecky will be the featured speaker at its 2026 Gala.

The event will be held Nov. 6 at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield. All proceeds raised through the event will be used to meet the region’s growing demand for advanced cancer care.
Dravecky is a Youngstown native and former All-Star pitcher for the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. At the height of his baseball career in 1988, he was diagnosed with cancer in his pitching arm.
Despite being told it was highly unlikely he would ever pitch again, Dravecky returned to the mound the following year. However, just five days after making his return, Dravecky’s arm broke during a pitch. The injury and a recurrence of cancer eventually led to the amputation of his left arm and shoulder, ending his baseball career.
Since retiring from baseball, Dravecky has gone on to inspire others as a motivational speaker and author.
“Dave’s journey from the peak of his Major League career through his battle with cancer is truly extraordinary,” said Amy Reed, SRMC director of development. “We are honored to welcome him as our keynote speaker at this year’s Gala to share his incredible story of hope and resilience.”
Tickets for this year’s event will go on sale Aug. 1. For sponsorship information, contact Reed at 330 337 2883 or amy.reed@salemregional.com.
