Amy Shope and Catherine Cercone Miller discussed the opening of the first Dylan’s House residence in Struthers, a project designed to provide housing and support for adults with autism.

Shope said the nonprofit’s mission is to enrich and empower adults with autism through housing, education and caregiver assistance, with the new home expected to serve three residents selected in partnership with Mahoning County and local provider agencies.

She described the growing need for autism housing resources, noting that many families struggle to find safe and supportive living options as children with autism become adults and continue needing care and structure.

The organization plans to continue expanding with future housing projects across the Mahoning Valley, including developments in Boardman and other communities.

Cercone Miller said the city actively welcomed the project and emphasized how the Struthers community came together to support the initiative, describing the neighborhood as one where residents look after one another and rally around families in need.

Both said the project represents more than housing, serving as a model for community-driven support and inclusion for adults with autism and their families.
