SALEM, Ohio – Young entrepreneurs will get a chance to show their creative wares alongside seasoned makers at the annual Nature + Nurture Maker’s Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9.

Tricia Ross, owner of Nature + Nurture, the bookstore at 515 E. State St. that will host the event, said she handpicks adult creative vendors, including many who have been part of her shop’s story.

Tables lining the sidewalk from Nature + Nurture to McCullough Park and on a closed area of South Lundy Avenue will feature many handcrafted items, created by entrepreneurs. Intermixed with those makers and vendors will be the kidpreneurs.

“That’s really the best part,” Ross said. “I think that makes it stand apart from a normal market – just that intermixing of the kids next to these really curated seasoned vendors.”

The children not only get a chance to show off their creative talents, but they also learn some business skills. They will pay $20 per table and learn how to market their items. Ross said she talks to them about anticipating their costs and charging accordingly.

“They have their own little businesses, and they have thought through what they’ve made,” Ross said. “They have a business name, and they’re supposed to have a logo. … It’s a great experience.”

The kidpreneur buisnesses have evolved over the past three years. For instance, Ross’ daughter made and sold lemonade, and then she offered pressed flower resin necklaces and other pressed flower items. She may try face painting this year.

Ross said there are a group of girls who have grown with their businesses each year at the event.

“It’s just really neat to see how they’re serious about it,” Ross said. “And people look forward to seeing them, and some of their stuff is just as good. They’ve thought through the design of the table or tent.”

In addition to books, Nature + Nurture also sells products that help families enjoy the outdoors together. Some of those invited to participate at the market have a similar goal.

Beech Creek Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve in Alliance will bring a walk-in butterfly tent. Raptor Hallow Sanctuary in Alliance will bring birds of prey. Kamara Outdoors of Youngstown will bring reptiles and amphibians.

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Center will return with its animal pelts, and the On Target Outfitters of Canfield will bring an archery truck, giving children a chance to safely try a bow. The Columbiana County Park District will have information about the nearby Greenway Trail.

“I want the market to connect my customers and goers with these area resources and gems,” Ross said. “Places they can go, things to do again, that Nature + Nurture lifestyle.”

The Nature + Nurture Maker’s Market will include music on the stage at nearby McCollough Park and in the alcove next to the store.
