YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Yellow Brick Place Cancer Support Center was founded 10 years ago by two cancer survivors: Donna Detwiler and Anna Aey.
The center helps cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and their loved ones by nourishing the mind, body and spirit with free services and support during their fights against cancer.
In 2024, the organization began a renovation and expansion project. Madison Umbel, associate director, anticipates completion will occur early this year, doubling space at the Cornersburg site.
New features will include a fountain in the library, a fully functional kitchen for nutrition classes and private rooms for individualized programming such as wig fittings, Reiki, massages and counseling.
“The timing of the completion of the project will be significant because 2025 marks our 10-year anniversary,” says Umbel.
For the past decade, Yellow Brick Place has operated in two unconnected suites. Now with three adjoining suites, the programming will no longer be constrained logistically and allow the organization to better carry out its mission, she notes.
Named nonprofit of the year by the Western Reserve Transit Authority, Yellow Brick Place anticipates a bright 2025 with its new space and community visibility, according to Umbel.
“We were honored to receive the award and to have been chosen by the community for our impact,” she says.
In addition to donations through its website, Yellow Brick Place has an upcoming spring raffle and a sponsored golf outing July 11 to support its mission.
