Fitch Senior Earns $12,000 Thomases Endowment Scholarship
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio – Austintown Fitch High School senior Alyssa Ruggles was nominated by teachers and administration to participate in the Young Women with Bright Future’s Scholarship Program through the Mahoning Valley YWCA. One female senior was nominated from every high school in the valley.
Alyssa completed multiple zoom leadership sessions, wrote two essays, and organized a community service project. She learned last weekend that she not only won the YWCA’s essay contest; but was awarded the $12,000 Thomases Endowment Fund Scholarship.
“It was an honor to be nominated for the Young Women with Bright Future’s Program and represent Fitch. Back in November when Mrs. Busico and Mrs. Krygowski announced I was the nominee, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity. Winning the $12,000 scholarship was such a surreal moment. With 29 other girls in the program, I am proud of my achievements and proud to represent Fitch,” said Ruggles.
Alyssa is a member of the cross-country team, where she is a captain, National Honor Society and the current president of the Interact Club. She is also a valedictorian for the class of 2022.
She plans to attend Youngstown State University and study chemical engineering. Additionally, she earned the YSU Choose OHIO First Scholarship and has been accepted into the YSU Honors College.
