BRISTOL TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Today in Flashback, Savannah Moss, collections and research manager for the Trumbull County Historical Society, tells us about the Bristol Civil War Monument.

Dedicated in 1863, it is recognized as the oldest memorial to Civil War soldiers in Ohio and the second oldest in the nation. Raised through a $500 community effort, it honors 14 men from Bristol Township who died between 1861 and 1863 while serving primarily with the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Eastern Theater.

Designed by local artist Frank J. Hammond and manufactured in Cleveland, the monument bears an inscription to the township’s fallen soldiers.

The Bristol Township Historical Society, in partnership with the Trumbull County Historical Society, is raising $12,000 to restore the Bristol Civil War Monument.
