The school will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house Friday. Parents who are considering enrolling their children, as well as anyone who is interested in learning about the school’s transformative approach to education, can attend an information session at noon. The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m., followed by refreshments and school tours from 1:15 to 2 p.m.

The school, which is currently accepting students who will be in kindergarten through seventh grade in the upcoming school year, will also distribute its application and schedule classroom visits for prospective students.

Flying Trees Academy was founded in 2021 as a hybrid homeschool program by Jaelyn Farris, a developmental psychologist and professor at Youngstown State University. The school was inspired by local families’ feedback on education gaps.

Recognizing the need for an educational approach that supports both healthy development and academic excellence, Farris envisioned a school that reimagines education.

The school employs The Farris Method, “an evidence-based approach to education that integrates research and practices from psychology, neuroscience, education and related fields,” a news release states.

“The model prioritizes human development and emphasizes self-regulation, developmentally aligned instruction, critical thinking, curiosity, education that aligns with students’ interests, and instilling a lifelong love of learning. This transformative approach creates classrooms where students feel safe, challenged and genuinely excited to learn,” the release states.

The school partners closely with families and the community to provide an “academically rigorous, respectful and inclusive learning environment where students are supported as whole people: intellectually, socially and emotionally.”
