Handel’s Ice Cream Plans 30 More Shops as Growth Accelerates

CANFIELD, Ohio – Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has opened 70 new shops since 2020 and plans to open at least 30 more by the end of this year.

The Canfield-based premium ice cream brand now has 116 locations across 11 states and aims to continue its growth spurt.

“Tradition is what sets us apart,” Rich Matherne, chief executive officer, said in a press release. “Our dedication to our customers, quality products, and community is what draws franchisees to our system.”

The company, which was founded in Youngstown over 75 years ago, is in “an exceptional” growth period, Matherne said.

“It’s an exciting time for our company as new franchisees join a proven brand with a strong legacy,” he said.

The chain is looking to grow in the southeastern states and branch into new markets, including Houston, Raleigh-Durham, Atlanta and Chicago, according to Jim Brown, senior vice president of relationship management.

“As we add more multi-unit operators to the system, we hope to continue inviting in new franchisees who align with our core values – family, traditions, and community,” Brown said.

Handel’s was ranked on Franchise Times’ list of the smartest-growing franchises earlier this year.

The company was recently named one of the Top 500 Franchises by Entrepreneur magazine. Nation’s Restaurant News included the chain in an article on emerging restaurant chains.
