WARREN, Ohio – Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday signed several bills into law, including Senate Bill 52, which designates multiple memorial highways, including one to honor late Mahoning Valley businessman Clarence “Sonny” Smith Jr.
The northbound and southbound lanes of state Route 7 between Washington Boulevard and Western Reserve Road in Boardman will be named the Clarence “Sonny” Smith Jr. Memorial Highway.
Smith, who died in 2021, was chairman of Compco and Diamond Steel Construction Co. He was also the owner of the former Adamas Gems & Jewelry in Boardman.
The philanthropist served on the board of directors of numerous civic, religious and nonprofit organizations.
He was also chairman of the Mahoning County Republican Party, ran for the Ohio House of Representatives and was a benefactor for GOP candidates seeking local, state and national offices.
