YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – An event that will revel in the music and fashion of the late 1990s and early 2000s, featuring national hip-hop artist Lil Ru, will take place April 4 at Penguin City Brewing, 460 E. Federal St., downtown.

“The entire evening will be centered around that era of hip-hop, R&B and pop music,” said Valley-based DJ Chip Banks, who is staging the event with Art Ward, Love Lounge and Penguin City.

“We launched the first installment of this experience in 2024, and the response was incredible,” Banks continued. “From that moment, we knew we had something special.”

The late ’90s and early 2000s was a defining time in entertainment because of the music, fashion and culture.

“It was an era that shaped a generation,” Banks said. “Our goal is to intentionally recreate that energy.”

Events with a curated theme is a concept that Banks believes in.

“They set the tone, create anticipation and prepare guests for the type of experience they’re walking into,” he said.

Lil Ru will help set the pace at the upcoming show.

The artist, known for his high‑energy performance and Southern hip‑hop influence, gained attention with his hit “Nasty Song” and his work with Def Jam Recordings.

There will also be guest DJs and hosts at the event.

Attendees can help set the tone by what they wear. A prize will be awarded to the person wearing the best 1990s- and 2000s-inspired outfit.

Doors will open at 9:30 p.m., and early arrival is encouraged. Early‑bird general admission tickets are $25 HERE or by emailing ChipBanksEvents@gmail.com. Attendees must be at least 21 years old to be admitted, and a valid ID is required.
