WARREN, Ohio – Brenda Linert, director of community impact for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, says a shortage of quality housing across the Mahoning Valley is creating challenges for both workforce growth and new business investment.
Linert explained that as new companies enter the region, many are struggling to attract and retain employees due to a lack of available and desirable housing options, particularly for individuals relocating to the area.
The issue, she said, extends across all housing types — from apartments to single-family homes — with demand outpacing supply at nearly every level. As a result, some workers are choosing to live outside the region and commute, limiting their connection to the local economy and community.
To address the problem, the chamber has worked with regional partners and elected officials to develop a comprehensive housing strategy, including the formation of a housing council and efforts to expand infrastructure, funding programs and development opportunities.
A key goal of the initiative is to support conditions that would allow for the development of at least 1,000 new housing units over the next five years, helping to meet demand and better position the region for continued economic growth.
Linert said addressing housing availability is critical not only for residents, but also for ensuring the long-term success of businesses choosing to invest in the Valley.
