YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Two insurance companies want to recoup money paid in claims following the Realty Tower explosion.
Travelers Indemnity Co. of Connecticut represented Youngstown Stambaugh Hotel, East Federal Street, and Travco Insurance Co. represented Jason Small, who lived in the Realty building.
The lawsuit filed this week in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court by the insurers lists as defendants YO Properties 47 LLC, LY Property Management LLC, Greenheart Companies LLC, Enbridge Inc., Enbridge (U.S.) Gas Distribution LLC, Enbridge Elephant Holdings LLC, Enbridge Alternative Fuel LLC, Enbridge Pipelines (Toledo) Inc., Enbridge Genoa U.S. Holdings LLC, Enbridge (U.S.) Inc., Enbridge EOG Holdings LLC, Dominion Energy LLC, Dominion Energy Inc., Dominion Energy Questar Corp. and 10 unidentified individuals.
The suit seeks $463,650.
YO Properties 47 owned Realty Tower, and LY Property Management managed it. A crew working for Greenheart was removing utility lines in the basement of the building when one member cut a natural gas line that was believed to be abandoned. The May 28, 2024, natural gas explosion, which killed one man and injured several others, occurred about six minutes later.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the explosion.
In May 2025, NTSB released a tranche of documents in its investigation and pointed to inaccurate records regarding the natural gas line.
According to the insurance companies’ complaint, the explosion damaged the hotel and destroyed personal property owned by Small.
It says Travelers Indemnity paid the hotel more than $420,650, and Travco paid Small $43,000.
It’s the latest of several lawsuits that have been filed stemming from the explosion.
