YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown State women’s basketball head coach Melissa Jackson reflects on her first season at the helm, highlighting both challenges and progress made in year one. Despite a postponed home opener and several season-ending injuries, Jackson emphasized the foundation her team laid through commitment to core values and daily standards.
Standout performances from young players, including Horizon League Player of the Year Sophia Gregory, offered optimism for the future. Jackson noted significant offseason additions through the transfer portal, including veteran guards Casey Santoro and Paulina Hernandez , to complement a largely underclassmen roster.
Heading into her second year, Jackson is focused on improving offensive efficiency and tempo while maintaining a strong defensive identity. With nine returners and added experience, she sees continuity and familiarity as keys to building on year one.
