HIRAM, Ohio – Hiram College recently announced the establishment of the James Kirby Martin Scholarship, a new endowed scholarship created by Frederick “Fred” Martin in memory of his brother, James Kirby Martin.
The scholarship will provide financial support to students with demonstrated need who have declared a major in history.
Funded through a commitment of $250,000, the James Kirby Martin Scholarship will ensure long-term support for Hiram students while honoring the enduring impact of the Martin family on the college, a news release states. In addition to establishing the endowed scholarship, Fred Martin is also providing the resources to purchase two fleet vehicles for the college.
Fred Martin, a retired automobile dealer and longtime supporter of the college, earned his degree in history and political science in 1964. He spent more than five decades as owner of Fred Martin Ford and Mercedes-Benz in Austintown before retiring in 2025. Throughout his life, he has remained deeply connected to Hiram, following in a family tradition of leadership and service.
“This scholarship reflects not only Mr. Martin’s commitment to Hiram, but also the deep personal meaning Hiram holds for his family,” said Shawn Dailey, vice president for development and alumni relations. “By honoring his brother’s legacy, he is creating opportunities for future students to pursue the study of history – just as both he and James did.”
The Martin family’s connection to Hiram spans generations. Fred’s father, Paul E. Martin, served as a trustee of the college for more than four decades, and Fred served on the college’s board of trustees from 1989 to 1996. Over the years, Fred has supported Hiram through multiple endowed funds, campus leadership roles and philanthropic initiatives.
