COLUMBUS, Ohio – The number of job openings increased throughout the state and regionally between April and May, according to OhioMeansJobs.

In Eastern Ohio’s four-county region – which covers Mahoning, Columbiana, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties – 5,739 jobs were posted on OhioMeansJobs.com between April 14 and May 13, the agency reported.

That’s an increase of 124 advertisements posted from the prior reporting period and a decrease of 1,070 from a year ago.

Statewide, the number of job openings over the period reached 172,631, an increase of 5,935 from a month ago. The latest job openings represent a decrease of 21,689 from the same period a year ago.

Regionally, most jobs are middle income, 34.3%, and upper middle income, 27%; followed by entry-level jobs, 19.3%; six-figure jobs, 11.2%; and high-income jobs, 8.2%. Most jobs, 47.8%, require a GED or high school diploma, while 27.5% require a bachelor’s degree; 16.3% an associate’s level degree; 5% a doctoral degree; and 3.4% a master’s degree.

The top jobs sought in the region are heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers at 457; registered nurses, 397; first-line supervisors of retail sales workers, 319; retail salespersons, 272; and fast food and counter workers, 108.

Statewide, most jobs are upper middle income, 27.6%, and middle income, 26.5%; followed by six-figure jobs, 21.9%; high-income jobs, 12.5%; and entry-level jobs, 11.4%. Most jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree, 40.8%; while 38.9% require a GED or high school diploma; 13.1% an associate’s degree; 4.4% a doctoral degree; and 2.9% a master’s degree.

The top jobs with advertisements across the state are registered nurses at 11,690; heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers, 8,697; first-line supervisors of retail sales workers, 6,012; retail salespersons, 5,073; and stockers and order fillers, 2,976.
