Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio is expanding its role in workforce development by equipping students with the financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurial skills that employers increasingly demand, its president says.
Over the past year, JAEO served more than 17,000 students in 81 schools, delivering programming that links classroom instruction with real-world application. Leaders say the organization’s impact is measured not just by reach, but by the relevance of its programs to today’s workforce needs.
JAEO has updated its curriculum to align with Ohio’s educational standards, emphasizing financial literacy, entrepreneurship and career readiness delivered by certified educators. The changes ensure that students gain skills that match regional economic realities.
“Employers are looking for young people who can think critically, communicate clearly and make informed decisions,” says Michele Merkel, Junior Achievement of Eastern Ohio president. “Our goal is to give students early exposure to these skills so they are better prepared for both employment and long-term financial independence.”
For nearly 75 years, JAEO has delivered classroom-based programming supported by business and community volunteers, whose real-world experience brings lessons to life. Research and employer feedback consistently highlight the value of experiential learning, particularly when introduced early, Merkel points out. Programs emphasize problem-solving, collaboration, leadership and financial decision-making – skills that regional employers identify as essential, she says.
To strengthen this foundation, JAEO enhanced its state-aligned, curricula, integrating personal finance, career exploration and entrepreneurial thinking. The lessons prepare students for hands-on simulations that mirror real economic systems and workplace dynamics.
A major component of JAEO’s growth strategy is the JA Discovery Center, which is under construction. The center will serve as a regional hub for JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, where students will manage businesses, make financial decisions, and explore roles as employees, consumers and citizens.
“The Discovery Center is an investment in the region’s future workforce,” Merkel says. “It connects education with practical experience and helps students see opportunities for themselves within Eastern Ohio.”
Through partnerships with educators, workforce leaders and community organizations, JAEO ensures its programs remain aligned with local economic priorities. As the organization grows, its focus remains on developing a skilled, informed and confident talent pipeline that supports long-term economic vitality in the region.
